Steelers trade rumor further suggests Arthur Smith has a hidden agenda

Steelers fans certainly didn’t have Dolphins Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith on their trade rumors bingo cards — but here we are.

On Thursday, insider Adam Schefter reported that Pittsburgh and Miami had been in trade talks to potentially ship Smith to the Steelers, as the Pro Bowl tight end is seeking a restructured deal for 2025.

It was certainly bewildering news for the Steel City faithful — and while there’s clear uncertainty at the QB position, there’s a massive George Pickens-sized vacancy on Pittsburgh’s offense. Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington are two of the more underrated tight ends in the league, and although OC Arthur Smith loves heavier packages on offense, another secret agenda may be at play here.

Van Jefferson and Cordarrelle Patterson — who both spent time with Arthur Smith on the Falcons — were signings built on familiarity over team needs and fit, which is why they struggled to find their footing last season.

Jonnu, similar to Jefferson and Patterson, knows the Steelers offensive coordinator all too well from their time together on both the Titans and Falcons. The Dolphins’ Pro Bowl tight end is immensely talented — but tight end is arguably one of the least pressing needs on the Steelers’ offense.

The Steelers need to trust in Freiermuth and Washington rather than bringing in yet another one of Arthur Smith’s former Falcons. There’s enough evidence by now to show how little these reunions have worked out in Pittsburgh.
