The New York Giants’ backfield will be an intriguing unit to keep an eye on when training camp rolls around in just over a month.
As the trio of Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Dante Miller return from last season, the Giants also managed to add the enticing Cam Skattebo to the mix during the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft.
Coming off a 3-14 season, the Giants weren’t a team that had the luxury of leaning on the run. The majority of their games featured the offense working from behind, which is why Tracy’s emergence as a receiving back was so impressive.
In terms of efficiency, the Giants were middle of the pack at 4.2 yards per carry, but they were bottom-half of the league in rushing first downs (104), rushing touchdowns (13), and rushing attempts (424).
Entering the 2025 season, the Giants’ backfield received a brutal ranking from Dalton Wasserman of Pro Football Focus, coming in at No. 31 just ahead of the Dallas Cowboys.
Giants running backs ranked 30th in the NFL in PFF rushing grade last season, yet the team brought its two leading ball carriers back for another season.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. displayed flashes with three 100-yard games, but he slowed down late in the season and eventually earned a mediocre 69.6 PFF rushing grade.
Devin Singletary was a bit less efficient and generated just 10 explosive runs out of 113 carries. Perhaps fourth-round rookie Cam Skattebo can provide a jolt after leading all Power Four running backs with a 93.3 PFF overall grade last season while at Arizona State.
It seems likely that Tracy and Skattebo will be the duo leading the charge, even though Singletary is entering the second year of a three-year deal he signed last offseason. They’re the most talented backs in the room, and they both have the upside to work between the tackles and as receivers.
The running back room could fare better than last season if the Giants experience some health along the offensive line, as well as some improved play under center with the arrival of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart.
Whether the Giants will remain a bottom-three rushing offense will depend on the game scripts, but there’s still a bit of upside here with their young players.
