Schafer, Beard, Clarkson lead Riders Thursday

OAKLAND, Calif. — Logan Beard and TJ Clarkson homered, Luke Schafer pitched into the eighth inning and the Glacier Range Riders handled Oakland 5-2 in Pioneer League baseball Thursday.

Beard’s two-run shot, his fifth of the season, sparked a big first inning for the Range Riders (11-16); Jack Lynch and Kyle Ashworth added RBI singles to put Glacier up 4-0 before Oakland (18-9) had a chance to bat.

Clarkson’s fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, came to lead off the fourth inning and put the Range Riders up 5-1.

Schafer (2-1) went 7 2-3 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and one walk. He gave way to Jason Franks in the eighth after surrendering a double to Davis Drewek and a single to Daniel Harris IV.

Franks retired the next hitter to end that inning, then worked around two singles in the ninth to notch his first save.

Schafer hit two batters and struck out five. Franks fanned one.

The teams continued their six-game series Friday evening.
