Jeff Brantley questions Masyn Winn’s Reds-Cardinals jog to first base

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn appeared to gift the Cincinnati Reds an out with his lack of hustle on a groundout during the 1st inning of Friday night’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, and it caught the attention of Fanduel Sports Network analyst Jeff Brantley, among others.

Winn grounded a Brady Singer pitch in the bottom of the 1st to Reds second baseman Matt McLain. McLain misplayed it as Winn jogged to first base, but still recovered in time to throw to Spencer Steer for the out.

“Masyn Winn was not running at all,” Brantley said during the broadcast. “That is quite surprising. If Winn is running even in the slightest with his speed, he beats this out. Check it out. ‘Ah well.’ That’s why he’s out. … That’s one thing that I will say about this Reds’ ballclub: Even when they were down offensively, the hustle and the attitude – never, there was never any wavering. They continued to push hard for it. And you’ve got to respect that. When you’re struggling offensively – and I’m sure that Winn was frustrated that he tapped the ball to second base. But you’ve still got to run, brother.”

Winn wasn’t benched. He doubled to left in his next at-bat against Singer, and finished the game 2-for-5, with a run and an RBI.
