Chelsea’s top earner could end up at Burnley or Sunderland warns former Premier League CEO

While everyone’s attention is on the 30 or so players at the Club World Cup, back at Cobham there must be some furious work going on trying to sort out Chelsea’s squad.

For all the fun we’ve had bringing players in, there are still so many on the books to move on. And the most stubborn to shift are of course those on the biggest wages – with Raheem Sterling top of the list. Speaking to Football.London, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness had a really wild suggestion for where the winger could end up.

Sterling likely to end up at promoted club claims former Everton CEO

“I think it’s going to be a big problem to move him on,” Wyness said, slightly stating the obvious as we enter our 14th month trying to flog him.

“I think you’re really going to be restricted, in my opinion, to the three clubs coming up – Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland. I think that’s where he might find a space.

“But again, the wages are going to have to be really heavily subsidised to get him any move at all. But I think it’s going to come to the point that that will be the case.

“It’s going to be a difficult move and I don’t know how long he’s got left on his contract yet, but still it’s going have to be Chelsea subsidising those heavily to get him out there.”

He’s right that we will certainly have to massively subsidise Sterling’s wages to move him on. But if that’s the case, why would it only be the promoted teams who are interested? Can’t you see someone more like his former team Everton, or perhaps Brighton, snapping him up for cheap and trying to get him back to his best?
