Phillies Predicted to Cut Ties With Ranger Suarez in Free Agency

Ranger Suarez has quietly been the Philadelphia Phillies’ best pitcher in 2025 with an ERA slightly better than Zach Wheeler and Christopher Sanchez.

Suarez, now in his eighth season with the Phillies, got started late in 2025 after dealing with an injury, but has been lights out in his first nine starts to the tune of a 2.20 ERA.

However, OnPattison’s Tim Kelly believes the Phillies may not bring Suarez back after this season.

Suarez is currently on a one-year, $8.8 million deal in his final year of arbitration. Spotrac predicts him to earn a three-year, $45 million deal as a free agent.

However, with the Phillies’ other rotational pieces and younger pitchers performing well, they may not be willing to pay that.

“Suarez has 2.20 ERA and eight quality starts in nine outings this season. Even though he missed the first month of the season, he’s forcing his way into the All-Star Game discussion. You do risk losing him this offseason,” Kelly wrote.

“I expect the Phillies will give him a qualifying offer, which will mean they get back some draft pick compensation if he departs. And if you made me guess, I’m more inclined to think Suarez will be elsewhere next year. But right now, he’s a huge part of your team.”

Suarez’s best year came in 2021 when he finished the season with a 1.36 ERA. That was also the first year he began pitching as a starter. Since he’s averaged a 3.35 ERA as a full-time starter over the last four years, capped by the year he’s started off in 2025.

However, the Phillies have Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Sanchez, and Mick Abel all under contract for the future. Abel has pitched stellar in his first four starts, and the Phillies’ top pitching prospect, Andrew Painter, looks like he will be ready for the Major Leagues soon.

With the depth and options the Phillies have in the starting pitching department, Philadelphia may opt to let Suarez find a new home after the 2025 season.
