Detroit Tigers starter exits game vs Rays

TAMPA, FL — Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize threw a 92 mph four-seam fastball with his final pitch in the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays.

It was his slowest fastball of the game.

And 2.4 mph slower than his average fastball velocity.

After that pitch, Mize exited the game early Sunday, June 22, at George M. Steinbrenner Field, but it’s unclear if he’s injured. The 28-year-old departed after a mound visit from manager A.J. Hinch and assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades.

Mize allowed one run on six hits and zero walks with five strikeouts across five-plus innings in Sunday’s start, throwing a total of 80 pitches. He surrendered a solo home run to Junior Caminero in the fourth inning.

Aside from that, he was lights out against the Rays.

He has a 2.88 ERA in 13 starts.

Earlier in 2025, Mize missed two weeks — from May 9 to May 24 — with a left hamstring strain. He also missed two months with a left hamstring strain in 2024, sidelined from July 3 to Aug. 30.

The Tigers already have two starting pitchers on the injured list: right-hander Reese Olson (right ring finger inflammation) and right-hander Jackson Jobe (right elbow surgery).
