Tennessee baseball lands two-way Rice transfer

Blaine Brown has committed to Tennessee baseball as a two-way transfer from Rice, he announced on social media on June 26.

Brown was a unanimous freshman All-American and an All-AAC pick as a designated hitter after hitting .292 with 10 homers and 38 RBIs. He hit 12 doubles among his 61 hits and walked 21 times. The left-handed hitter played some outfield.

The 6-foot-3 lefty pitcher threw in seven games, but only once after March 18. He allowed 10 earned runs in 4⅓ innings on nine hits and 12 walks. He started against Tennessee on March 1 in the Astros Foundation College Classic, allowing three runs on four walks with a strikeout for the lone out recorded.

Brown visited Tennessee on June 19 and announced his commitment on June 26.

Tennessee has eight players committed as transfers, including a pair of two-way players with Brown committed. Bowling Green two-way star DJ Newman previously committed. Newman was a weekend starter at Bowling Green and a designated hitter who can play in the outfield.

The Vols have added four pitchers in the transfer portal in Brady Frederick of ETSU, Bo Rhudy of Kennesaw State, Clay Edmondson of UNC Asheville and Mason Estrada of MIT. Both Edmondson and Estrada are eligible for the 2025 MLB Draft and are considered draft risks.

UT has commitments from former Virginia star Henry Ford and Garrett Wright from Bowling Green. Ford is a first baseman and outfielder who is draft eligible. Wright can catch and play in the outfield.
