New York Knicks insider reveals Mike Brown contract details

The New York Knicks‘ coaching search concluded this week with the hiring of Mike Brown. As the team prepares for his introductory press conference, details have emerged about the contract he received.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, Brown is receiving a four-year deal worth $40 million in total. The $10 million annual average value will make Brown one of the highest-paid NBA coaches next season.

New York originally targeted active head coaches, attempting to land the likes of Ime Udoka (Houston Rockets), Billy Donovan (Chicago Bulls), Chris Finch (Minnesota Timberwolves), and Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks).

When those efforts failed, the Knicks’ coaching search turned to Brown, Taylor Jenkins, James Borrego, and Micah Nori. While Nori reportedly made a strong impression on the Knicks organization, the team wanted to hire someone with head-coaching experience.

Remarkably, per Begley, Brown’s deal means that New York will be responsible for $70 million in head-coaching salaries owed over the next four years. In addition to Brown’s contract, Tom Thibodeau is still owed the remaining $30 million from his deal.

There’s a chance the Knicks could get out from some of that financial obligation if Thibodeau is hired by another NBA team. The Sacramento Kings received some financial relief with New York hiring Brown, offsetting some of the money Sacramento owed him after firing him during the season.
