The Jacksonville Jaguars’ Travon Walker just missed out on a unique recognition.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently selected the best player to wear each jersey number heading into the 2025 season. Ultimately, no Jaguars players made this list, but Benjamin did mention Walker when discussing the No. 44.
Instead of Walker, Benjamin would choose Ravens’ cornerback Marlon Humphrey. Over his career, Humphrey has allowed a completion rate of just 58% and 11.4 yards per catch. He’s also coming off a season in which he had really impressive ball production with six interceptions and 10 pass breakups, according to PFF.
“Travon Walker is faring reasonably with the Jaguars in this number, and Zaire Franklin is a tenacious leader for the Colts defense wearing the same thing,” wrote Benjamin. “Humphrey has been a top-shelf corner basically every other year in Baltimore, though, and hit a career-high six picks in 2024.”
Walker, meanwhile, is looking to become the first player in Jaguars’ history this year to record three straight seasons of double-digit sacks. He finished the 2024 season ranked 19th in pressures among all edge defenders and he was 10th in run stops.
“Everybody wants to get double-digit sacks,” Walker said, via Jaguars.com. “For me, I just want to be a total and complete football player. I want to be able to stop the run because we aren’t able to rush the passer without stopping the run. Once we do that it allows us to get after the quarterback. I just want to come out here and be the best overall player I can be every day.”
Under new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, Walker and other defenders are back at their more natural playing weights. As Maason Smith described, we will see a more attacking play-style up front, and based on what we saw from Green Bay, I’d also anticipate more blitzes and simulated pressures, which can benefit the defensive line.
For the No. 16 in Benjamin’s rankings, instead of Trevor Lawrence, he selected Jared Goff. And instead of Josh Hines-Allen being the pick for No. 41, Benjamin went with Alvin Kamara. Bijan Robinson was the pick at No. 7 over Brian Thomas Jr.
