Kyrie Irving scoffs at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander haters

Being on a team whose fanbase is one of the biggest culprits, Kyrie Irving debunking what Dallas Mavericks fans usually say about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander must’ve been nails on the chalkboard.

As he recovers from a torn ACL, Irving addressed the popular running gag that Gilgeous-Alexander is only an MVP winner because he relies on the whistle to bail him out and gift him points. Never mind the fact that his 30-plus point campaign this past season was painfully average with free-throw attempts.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder were on their way to an NBA championship, Irving took to his video game stream to talk about Gilgeous-Alexander in a laid-back environment. He praised the 26-year-old fresh off one of the greatest individual seasons ever with an MVP award, Western Conference Finals MVP, NBA Finals MVP, scoring title and a ring.

“I know a lot of you guys be talking about, being funny, talking about, ‘He’s a free throw merchant, he’s this and he’s that.’ Nah, man. Shai just plays the game the right way, he plays at a high level,” Irving said. “You gotta be a master manipulator out there. It’s part of the game. All the greats have done it. For me, I look at him as one of the guys that’s gonna be the prototype for the next generation.”

All Mavericks fans could do was smile and nod. It’s no secret they’re one of Gilgeous-Alexander’s biggest rivals. After all, they had to see him lap their previous franchise star Luka Doncic with individual and team accolades in just a couple of years.

But it’s nice to hear Irving respect Gilgeous-Alexander for what he’s done. History will look back at him in fondness. He’s amid one of the greatest primes ever by a scoring guard. There’s a reason why most of his accomplishments have only been done by all-time greats like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
