Tuesday’s Washington Mystics-Chicago Sky matchup was a special treat for DMV-area natives. Not only was the game played at EagleBank Arena in Virginia, which gave fans further away from Washington, D.C. easier access, but it featured two Maryland natives.

Sky forward Angel Reese and Mystics center Shakira Austin each grew up in Maryland and also played for the Terrapins before transferring to LSU and Ole Miss, respectively. Reese has garnered more fanfare, but both players showed out for their teams on Tuesday.

Reese led all players with 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Austin tallied 15 points and eight boards. Both players also had four assists.

Austin opened up about what it’s like to face Reese, via Monumental Sports Network’s Tyler Byrum.

“I mean, we both like to talk a lot, both from DMV and that’s just something we do,” she said. “We compete. We like to show how passionate we are. And every time we go, it’s gonna be a good show.”

Washington head coach Sydney Johnson then said “That was the PG version.”

The Mystics won 81-79 and are now 2-0 against the Sky this season. Austin closed the win out with a layup off of an offensive board and two free throws after Reese tied the game at 79-79 with free throws at the other end.

All-Stars Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron scored 11 and 13 points for Washington, respectively. The Mystics are now 9-10, while Chicago is 5-13.

The two teams will play again on July 29.
