Glenn Martens makes Maison Margiela debut

On Wednesday, Glenn Martens made his creative director debut for Maison Margiela with his Artisanal 2025 collection. The show shook the fashion industry, with many critics applauding Martens’ bold designs, built-in opulence and references to Martin Margiela’s house codes. Business of Fashion‘s Tim Blanks described the debut as “a spectacular walking contradiction and living proof that Martens is one of the most exciting designers working in fashion.” The New York Times‘s Vanessa Friedman pointed out the masks (a Margiela signature) could be seen as commentary on the state of women in the world. Vogue‘s Sarah Mower tagged the collection as “an apparition of fearsome beauty.” See Martens’ debut Margiela collection above. {Business of Fashion/paywalled; The New York Times/paywalled; Vogue/paywalled}

What Saks’ new debt rating means

Saks was able to secure “up to $600 million” in additional financing from current debt holders, with $300 million delivered at the end of June. Because of this additional financing, S&P Global will likely apply the term “selective default” to the deal, which means that a company has chosen to hold off on repaying some bills while settling others. Saks Global CEO Marc Metrick reassured vendors that this is not the same as default, and that the transaction triggered the rating change, not business operations. The company still plans to honor the repayment plan he laid out in February, with back payments slated to start in mid-July. {Puck/paywalled}

How a fashion critic threw a Dior runway watch party

When fashion critic Elias Medini didn’t receive an invitation to Jonathan Anderson’s debut show for Dior, he posted a message on social media inviting all of Paris to watch the show with him at Le Saint Denis, a cafe and bar in the city’s 10th Arrondissement. He brought his TV from home and arranged the seats to accommodate a modest audience, but nearly 300 people showed up. Medini felt a watch party was a way to reclaim space and open the Dior show up to other fashion fans. {The New York Times/paywalled}
