Red Sox Reportedly Narrowing in on Certain Trade Deadline Targets

2025 has been anything but normal for the Boston Red Sox.

This wild season has already seen three top prospects debut, the addition and return of notable veteran starting pitchers, and a Rafael Devers West Coast trade.

But, despite all the chaos, the Red Sox have strung together an impressive stretch lately, and are now just three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the American League East lead. Boston is a good team, albeit far from perfect, and its 53-45 record suggests it will buy at the deadline.

According to Sean McAdam of MassLive, the Red Sox are more likely to target younger, club-controlled pitchers rather than a two-month rental.

One potential option that fits that bill is Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller. Sandy Alcántara is another choice, but perhaps his Miami Marlins teammate, Edward Cabrera, would be a better fit in Boston.

Regardless of who the Red Sox go after, seeing a patient front office not overreact is encouraging. Yes, Boston is playing better baseball and has set itself up nicely to make a run at the division, or at least a Wild Card spot.

But this is still a flawed team that needs to start pitching and have a first baseman. Plus, the Red Sox need to do everything in their power to retain Alex Bregman, who looks increasingly like he will opt out of his contract after the year.

He could and probably should still stick around, but understanding that not all of their chips must be played in 2025 should help them in the long run.
