These Chiefs WRs could step up while Rashee Rice serves suspension

The Kansas City Chiefs will have to rely on the depth of their receiving corps next season while star pass-catcher Rashee Rice serves a suspension.

Though the particulars of Rice’s punishment haven’t yet been announced, experts expect that the former Southern Methodist University Mustang could be out for six or more games.

Given the possibility of a lengthy suspension, several of Kansas City’s lesser-known wide receivers could get a chance to compete for important roles in the Chiefs’ offense.

With training camp set to kick off this week, take a look at this list of four pass-catchers who might be able to step up for Kansas City next season while Rice is out:

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

The Chiefs have relied on Smith-Schuster in the past, and while he hasn’t shown the explosiveness that made him a viable starter early in his career, the former University of Southern California Trojan could be just what Kansas City’s offense needs to cope with Rice’s absence.

WR Nikko Remigio

Remigio has made a name for himself as a fan-favorite wideout at Chiefs Training Camp and may get his first opportunity to be targeted by Patrick Mahomes consistently while Rice serves his suspension.

WR Tyquan Thornton

It remains to be seen if Thornton’s raw speed will translate to Andy Reid’s offense, but the former New England Patriot should get more opportunities to show what he can do with Rice on the sideline.

WR Jalen Royals

As a rookie, Royals wasn’t likely to play much of a role in Kansas City’s offense this season. But if he manages to crack the Chiefs’ 53-man roster next season, the former Utah State Aggie may benefit the most from Rice’s punishment.
