Bears Turn Heads With QB Injury News on Opening Day of Training Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Chicago Bears opened training camp this weekend, as rookies and quarterbacks reported. Along with their arrival came news of an injury issue out of the QB room.
Chicago listed veteran backup signal-caller Case Keenum on its NFI (non-football injury) list on Saturday, July 19. The NFI list is concerned with players who are dealing with some sort of ailment sustained outside regular football activities, such as a game or practice session.
"QB Case Keenum was placed on the active/non-football injury list, the team announced," per NFL.com.
Neither the team nor NFL.com offered more information on the specific injury afflicting the quarterback.
Keenum, who will play the upcoming season at 37 years old, didn't take a snap during the 2024 campaign as a member of the Houston Texans. Prior to that, he played 11 seasons in the NFL and amassed a record of 30-36 as a starter across 80 career appearances.
Keenum has tallied 15,175 passing yards, 79 touchdown passes and 51 interceptions over the course of his career, which spanned stints with eight different franchises before he landed in Chicago this offseason on a one-year contract worth $2.25 million.
Barring an injury or some other unforeseen development, the Bears will start second-year signal-caller Caleb Williams in 2025 during the team's first season under new head coach Ben Johnson, who spent the past three years as the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions.
Keenum will challenge third-year QB Tyson Bagent, formerly an undrafted rookie in 2023, for the QB2 spot. Also on the depth chart is Austin Reed, an undrafted rookie in 2024. Reed didn't see the field last season.
Bagent, on the other hand, has played a significant role with the team to this point in his career. He has appeared in nine games throughout his first two NFL seasons, starting four contests and earning a record of 2-2. Bagent, 25, has completed 66.2% of his passes for 870 yards, three touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also rushed the football 29 times for 102 yards and two scores.
Bagent is entering the final season of his three-year contract, worth a total of $2.72 million, and will be a restricted free agent next March.
