Lakers guard Marcus Smart's buyout terms with Wizards have been revealed

Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart became the latest free agent addition for the Los Angeles Lakers — joining Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia, who signed with the organization earlier in the offseason. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year agreed to a two-year, $11 million, that includes a player option for 2026-27, almost immediately after agreeing to a buyout with the Washington Wizards.

While his previous team had been hoping to find a trade partner before agreeing to part ways with Smart, they were unable to do so leading to his buyout. The terms of the buyout, which paved the way for him to join the Lakers, were not publicly disclosed at the time of the announcement.

Brett Siegel of Clutch Points recently shared that Smart gave up more money than he is set to make in Los Angeles.

"Marcus Smart, who was set to make $21.58M this season with the Wizards, is giving up just south of $7 million in his buyout agreement to join the Lakers, team sources told @ClutchPoints," Clutch Points' Brett Siegel tweeted Monday. "Smart will be on the books in LA for $5.1M this season with a player option for 26-27."

Smart will be entering his 12th season in the league so it is no surprise that he would rather chase a championship than spend a year with the rebuilding Wizards. He has struggled to stay healthy over the past two seasons as injuries have limited him to just 54 games.

The three-time All-Defensive first-team selection remains one of the top perimeter defenders in the league, when healthy. Smart will fill a major need for Los Angeles as the team entered the offseason in search of a point of attack defender. It has been reported that his decision to join the Lakers was due, in part, to recruitment from superstar Luka Dončić.
