The Sacramento Kings entered the offseason looking to make additions to their roster to help them compete for a playoff spot next season in the loaded Western Conference.

Of course, many expected the Kings to begin a rebuild this offseason or at least trade away one or two of their star players but it looks as though Sacramento is set on keeping their core together an trying to compete for a playoff spot next season.

Sacramento began their offseason by selecting Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 NBA Draft, adding much-needed young talent to their roster.

They then filled their void at the starting point guard position in free agency by landing Dennis Schroder via a sign-and-trade deal.

While the Kings added Schroder to be their starting point guard next season, they have still been linked to other veteran guards still on the free agent market including a former NBA MVP.

According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, the Kings have continued to show interest in Russell Westbrook during free agency as a backup point guard option next season.

ā€œRussell Westbrook and Malcolm Brogdon are the two players who have come up the most in conversations about how the Sacramento Kings will fill out their roster this offseason,ā€ Siegel wrote. ā€œThe word from NBA Summer League regarding the Kings is that they still want to add Westbrook even after their sign-and-trade to acquire Dennis Schroder from the Pistons.ā€

Of course, the Kings now face an obstacle in their path of potentially signing Westbrook as they brought back Doug McDermott on Monday, which filled their final roster position.

For Sacramento to sign Westbrook, they would have to either waive a player or make a trade with another team to open up a roster spot.

Either way, adding Westbrook would be a solid addition to the Kings’ bench as he would give them a much-needed playmaker and scorer in the second unit, though they could stick with Devin Carter as their backup point guard entering next season.
