Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs Reveals Reason for Offseason Jersey Number Switch

Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs Reveals Reason for Offseason Jersey Number Switch originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Detroit Lions’ running game is expected to be a strength yet again in 2025-26 with the dynamic duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery set to return, flanked by Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki.

The Lions finished sixth in the NFL in rushing yards with 2,488 last season while finishing second in rush touchdowns behind the Buffalo Bills with 32.

A key cog of the Lions’ running game is Gibbs, a third-year pro who is hoping to unlock another level in his game under new offensive coordinator John Morton.

Gibbs changed his jersey number from 26 to 0 this offseason. He was asked about the switch by gathered media at the Lions’ practice facility in Allen Park, Michigan on Wednesday and was candid with his response.

“Oh, I just didn’t like 26,” Gibbs said on Wednesday, adding that he sought the lowest number possible after being drafted by Detroit number 12 overall in 2023

The numbers 26, 33, 35 and 40 were offered, a notion that Gibbs scoffed at during his interview.

Gibbs signed a four-year contract after being drafted and could be in line for an extension soon as one of the most productive, explosive, and dynamic players at his position in the National Football League.
