The New York Liberty took on the Los Angeles Sparks in New York on Saturday night with their 17-6 record on the line against a sub-.500 Sparks team.
The Liberty fell behind by 15 points after one quarter, trailing 35-20 as they attempted to mount a comeback in the second quarter.
Coach Sandy Brondello’s team was unable to close much distance as they outscored the Sparks 25-23 in the second quarter, heading into the locker room down 58-45.
The Liberty wound up losing at home 101-99 and lost one of their biggest stars in the process.
The game included an injury to forward Brenna Stewart, and an update on her status going forward.
“Per the broadcast, Breanna Stewart, who exited the game in the first quarter, is OUT for the rest of the matchup against the Sparks,” reporter Meghan L. Hall wrote.
“It’s a lower leg injury.”
The woman known as ‘Stewie’ had three points and a rebound in three minutes of action against Los Angeles.
Guard Sabrina Ionescu led New York in scoring 17 points in 18 minutes at halftime while fans wondered about the Liberty’s fallen star. She finished with 30 points.
Stewart is averaging 19 points per game, 6.8 rebounds, four assists and 1.5 steals this season for the 2024 WNBA champs, leading her team to another season to remember so far.
Rickea Jackson led the Sparks with 20 points in 16 minutes as of halftime and finished with 24 points.
