Liza Koshy on Shopping for Secondhand Khaite and Chic $17 Flip Flops

What’s the opposite of gatekeeping? Welcome to “Payment Processing,” in which we ask stylish, generally cool people who’ve tried it all about their favorite fashion and beauty buys.

If you were around for the first phenomenon of short-form online video content — otherwise known as the six-second recording app Vine — chances are, you’re very familiar with social media superstar Liza Koshy. She rose to fame around 2013 for her hilariously quirky personality, which beamed across users’ phones through fast-paced sketch comedy, sharp one-liners and exaggerated facial expressions. Thanks to her success on the short-lived platform, Koshy went on to act in major projects like Netflix’s “Work It” and the 2023 blockbuster “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.”

Now, she’s taking on another iconic franchise by starring in the latest “Naked Gun” film (the first addition to the franchise since its third installment in 1994). “I was born from the comedy that ‘Naked Gun’ built,” Koshy tells Fashionista. “It’s so silly and dumb, but brilliantly dumb. And I like to describe myself as brilliant dumb.”

Koshy stars as a detective alongside Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. “I play this delusively confident character, which is me as well, just going about the world, barely escaping death and somehow is at the top of their career,” she says. “I loved portraying characters like that on my YouTube channel 10 years ago. I was so influenced by Leslie Nielsen (who starred in the first three films).”

Koshy says she’s also been intentionally paying tribute to the classic comedy through her style on this press run. “I really wanted to wear small, little chic glasses like Rachel from ‘Friends’ — super ’90s,” she describes. “And lots of men’s ties, so I can play off of me being a detective and paying homage to Leslie Nielsen. Also, Liam Neeson’s character never takes his tie off; he’s always at work.”

Ahead, Koshy discusses the nostalgic makeup products she “wants to chew on,” several pieces she’s snagged from The RealReal and stolen underwear from various photoshoot sets.

What’s a luxury beauty item you’re into right now?

I’m very lucky, very privileged to have a beauty partnership with Dior. So every time I run out of the Iconic Overcurl and Overvolume and Primer set, I beg Daddy Dior to refill it. But they’re busy, so if they can’t get to it, then I just buy it. I love that mascara. The primer extends the fibers of your eyelashes and makes them longer. I need a subscription model for that.

What’s a drugstore/mass market beauty item you’re eyeing right now?

In their new campaign, Saweetie and Paris Hilton are selling the hell out of NYX Cosmetics to me. There are these gorgeous little Play-Doh-looking products that are really cute — I just want to chew on them. There’s this Fat Oil Lip Drip and Buttermelt Bronzer that I love. NYX’s use of adjectives and the innovation behind their products is just really creative and like, something that could be in your pencil bag from middle school. Yeah, I would love a campaign.

What’s a beauty staple you love so much you’ve bought multiples?

The Glossier Stretch Concealer. I have different shades of it for concealing, highlighting and contouring. I paint by numbers on my face with that. It literally stretches like it claims in the title, and I seriously stretch it out. It becomes my entire foundation. I’m able to carve out this fake Greek god bone structure on my face with it.

What’s an accessory you’re eyeing right now?

I just got a bunch of sunglasses from Quay that I really like. So now I’m just scouring its website for any other cute ’90s cat-eye glasses because that’s what my stylist and I are working on for this press tour.

What shoes do you want to buy right now?

Right now, there are these vegan snakeskin flip-flops from Gap. I love what Zac Posen is doing there. I want Zac Posen to do what he has done for Gap to do for the world. These sandals are only $17 right now, and they’re in one of my 40,000 open tabs, so I need to just pull the trigger. I’m happy to whip my dogs out this summer.

Any other luxury fashion items you’re lusting after?

I just bought a Khaite lamb leather jacket off The RealReal that is just gorgeous. I try not to buy anything new, but I feel like if something secondhand is made from leather or made with precious animals, I don’t feel as bad because it’s been around for a long time already and now I’m just giving it a new life.

I just got a Vivienne Westwood dress that I love. I also just copped a Paco Rabanne metal mockneck halter top. It’s metal, it’s insane. There’s also this gorgeous Jean Paul Gaultier black leather dress on The RealReal that I’m just waiting for the price to go down on.

What’s an affordable fashion item on your shopping list?

Any T-shirts made by KidSuper. I am obsessed with his mind. Everything seems to come from a childlike state of wonder and curiosity when it comes to his designs and shows. It’s so different and thoughtful, but also playful and silly.

What’s a wardrobe staple you love so much you’ve bought multiples?

I’ve stolen all the Commando underwear from every set I’ve ever been on. I just take the underwear home every single day. The thongs are so comfy and seamless. And MeUndies, too. They make great soft, perfect and cozy period panties.

What’s the last product an influencer or celeb influenced you to buy?

My “Naked Gun” press tour has influenced me to buy a ’90s gray Gucci suit from The RealReal and a blue button-down shirt from Amazon, paired with a Gucci tie. I recreated the “Naked Gun” poster using all of that and also a little inspiration from Jonathan Anderson’s recent Dior show. Photos to come!
