On Saturday, Luka Doncic agreed to sign a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. Now they can truly get down to the business of winning at least one NBA championship with him as their new centerpiece.
They have made some very solid additions to their roster this summer. They filled what was a huge hole at the center position by signing Deandre Ayton, who seems to fit the prototype of the type of center Doncic loves to play alongside. The Lakers also added 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia while retaining backup center Jaxson Hayes.
Many feel they don’t quite have a true championship-caliber roster right now. But at a press conference on Saturday to announce his extension, Doncic expressed a high level of confidence in the Lakers’ roster, per ESPN.
“We have what we need to compete for the championship,” Doncic said at a news conference Saturday. “I’ll try to win every game no matter what, and we got some new great guys on the team, so you know we’re going to go for it.”
Doncic reportedly had a hand in getting Ayton and Smart to sign with Los Angeles. He has gotten into much better shape this summer, and it could all result in the team surprising people this coming season.
L.A. went 50-32 and finished third in the Western Conference this past season while overcoming several challenges, including the challenge of having to build chemistry on the fly after trading for Doncic in early February. He made it clear during a dinner meeting in May with general manager Rob Pelinka that he wants to win championships right away and that he doesn’t want to wait to do so.
