Of all the Y2K-inspired footwear trends that have emerged in recent years, few athletic brands have had as strong of a grasp on the trend as Asics. While it’s difficult to pinpoint the originator of the era’s techy, mesh and synthetic-based running shoes, Asics is a frontrunner for the most popular purveyor of the look. From its fan-favorite Gel-Kayano 14 model to the wallet-friendly Gel-1130, Asics’ offerings are plentiful, and it will soon add another model to the lineup.

Tapping multinational retailer JD Sports as an exclusive partner for the launch, Asics will release this week its new Gel-Sekiran sneaker in the U.S. for the first time. Using JD Sports’ Global Access platform as its launching point, the retro-inspired, yet all-new Asics Gel-Sekiran will debut in an eye-catching Green Gecko/Pure Silver colorway. 

The new model draws inspiration from Asics’ 2000s and 2010s performance running shoes, using the brand’s signature Gel cushioning for underfoot comfort. Specifically, the Gel-Sekiran takes a page from the midsole of 2015’s Gel-Cumulus 17 sneaker. 

“This debut colorway delivers contrast in all the right places—understated base tones meet sharp accents for a balanced, standout look,” reads JD Sports’ press release for the launch. “Whether you’re lacing them up to move or to make a statement, this is a silhouette that brings global energy to every step.” 

Asics introduced the Gel-Sekiran model in February and the model has thus far only been available from overseas channels. 

After arriving in its North American debut Green Gecko/Pure Silver look, the Asics Gel-Sekiran will be released in Black/Silver/Green and Piedmont Gray/Pure Silver variations in September, also exclusively through JD Sports.

The Asics Gel-Sekiran in Green Gecko/Pure Silver will be released Friday for a retail price of $140 with availability from jdsports.com and JD Sports stores. The pair has a style code of 1203A954-300.
