Khabib's Bold Prediction Casts Doubt on Islam Makhachev’s Longevity

Khabib’s Bold Prediction Casts Doubt on Islam Makhachev’s Longevity originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The former champion believes the clock is ticking for Makhachev’s MMA career

The last time fans saw Islam Makhachev inside the Octagon, it was another dominant performance. At UFC 311, Makhachev made quick work of Renato Moicano, securing a first-round submission to successfully defend his lightweight title. But instead of chasing another defense, Makhachev opted to vacate the belt and aim higher—literally, chasing the chance to become a double champ. His next move: welterweight, where he’s expected to challenge newly crowned champion Jack Della Maddalena. However, that opportunity might be one of the last chapters in his career.

During a recent press conference via Ushatayka, a clip shared by Red Corner MMA captured Khabib Nurmagomedov speaking candidly about Islam Makhachev’s potential retirement and aging in the fight game.

The former lightweight champion didn’t hold back:
‘Islam, in my honest opinion, one and a half—two years. Because of age. He’s going to be 34 in October. When you turn 35, you need to stop doing this and leave the sport for young guys. If you don’t finish at 35, somebody is going to finish you.’

Khabib, who retired undefeated at 29-0, stepped away from the sport at just 32 years old. He defended his lightweight title three times, defeating the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. His decision to walk away while still on top was seen as rare and admirable in the fight world.

With Khabib serving as a mentor, coach, and close confidant in Makhachev’s career, his words carry real weight. If Khabib’s bold prediction holds true, fans may only have a few more chances to witness Makhachev in action before he rides off into the sunset.
