São Paulo ‘survived’ and secured a valuable draw this Tuesday (12) against Atlético Nacional in the round of 16 of the Libertadores.
The match in Medellín had dramatic moments for the Tricolor, who emerged unscathed from the opponent’s pressure and left the field without conceding any goals.
Atlético Nacional missed two penalties, both taken by Edwin Cardona, and also hit the post twice in the second half.
The return match of the confrontation takes place next Tuesday (19) at Morumbi.
In case of another draw, the team advancing to the quarter-finals will be decided by penalties.
The beginning of the game was tense for São Paulo, who almost conceded the first goal in less than 15 minutes.
Atlético Nacional had a penalty awarded in their favor after the ball hit Ferraresi’s arm inside the area.
Cardona stepped up to take the penalty and shot wide, keeping the score at zero.
São Paulo improved on the field after the missed penalty, appearing more in the attacking area.
But the positive signs the Tricolor showed at that moment of the match did not return in the second half.
Atlético Nacional dominated the actions throughout the final stage and on several occasions came very close to opening the score.
Moreno hit a beautiful shot after a corner kick and hit the post.
A few minutes later, the post saved São Paulo again, after Hinestroza finished a counterattack with a low shot.
Rafael still had his hero moment in the match with another penalty awarded to the home team.
Ferraresi was involved again, committing a foul inside the area against Morelos.
Cardona took the penalty for the second time and was stopped by São Paulo’s goalkeeper.
