Xabi Rodrigues, a makeup artist at MAC Iberia, makes a more direct allusion, calling out the normalization of non-invasive cosmetic procedures: “Lip filler looks great with a nude stick and lip liner…this is exactly how we achieved the look of fuller lips before hyaluronic acid injections became more available.” The makeup artist also notes the clear influence of OG Y2K It-girls—the Olsen twins, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, et al.—who continue to wear this style of makeup. Factor in the success of the Olsens’ fashion brand, The Row, and it’s no wonder this throw-back beauty look is with us once again.

Rodrigues says we can also, of course, thank Gen Z for the latest incarnation of the trend: “They see nude lipstick as novel,” she says. Plus, pale lips are “much more casual than a red lip,” adds Zamora, who notes that a muted lip suits a range of tastes and aesthetic preferences. “Those who want to enhance their lips can use lipliner or add a touch of light concealer in the center to amp up the volume, and those who want something more discreet can enjoy the fact that the overall look isn’t over-the-top.”

How to find the right lip color

According to Chanel makeup ambassador Raquel Alvarez, there are two variables to consider: your skin tone and your undertone. “In general terms, cool tones will harmonize better with pink tones while gold or warm tones will look better with warmer hues,” she says.

You’ll also want to look at the level of natural pigmentation already present in your lips. “You know how children often have bright, rosy lips? Unfortunately, when we grow up we lose the wonderful microcirculation responsible for the tone,” notes Alvarez. “If you’re lucky enough to still have a saturated natural lip color, don’t try to camouflage it—it won’t look good. Instead, choose a similar tone,” she recommends. “However, if you have naturally pale lips you can wear a lighter hue with no problem.”

To that end, it’s worth trying a few shades until you find one that works for you. And don’t just sample them on your hand or arm, either. As Rodrigues suggests, “you really have to try each color on the lips to get it right.”

Once the decision has been made, keep the rest of your makeup look fresh. “The most important thing is to avoid heavy, smoky eyes so that it doesn’t look too retro,” says Zamora. “If you have to accentuate the eyes to keep the whole face from looking flat, I recommend bold eyebrows and dark, full eyelashes. And, of course, a sweep of blush for a healthy glow.”
