Rich Rodriguez breaks down the art of creating big plays

There is an art form to creating a big play on either side of the ball.

Some of it boils down to speed and athleticism, as some players have the ability to transform a five or ten-yard run into a big chunk of yardage, given the natural talent level. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, some players simply have the ability to dominate on a pass rush and affect the quarterback.

Having those types of players is key in order to generate those explosive plays that coaches want.

“The explosive ones come from somebody that took advantage of a little bit of space and took off,” West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez said.

But there’s a mental part to it as well.

“Some of it is your guys recognizing whether it’s on offense or defense, that moment where they’re bringing the house and they’re giving you opportunities to get a big play if you execute,” he said.

Executing against a base defense that might lead to a first down, but against a more aggressive style of attack that could be a much bigger play or even a touchdown.

But that execution aspect doesn’t happen by accident.

“That part is where coaches and players got to make sure we get that done in camp,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said.

That involves putting players in the right positions to handle those types of situations, such as when going against an all-out blitz, making sure that everybody is being picked up but the least dangerous, or furthest away, from the quarterback.

Those are teachable moments and ones that are critical in the department of generating big plays on either side of the football.
