Penn State opened the 2025 season as the presumptive favorite to win the Big Ten and looked the part in its opener against Nevada. The Nittany Lions outgained the Wolfpack 438-203 and recorded 12 more first downs. They also forced three turnovers on defense and found the end zone on five different occasions.
It wasn’t the most explosive performance by quarterback Drew Allar and running back Nick Singleton, but that wasn’t quite needed in that matchup. Allar completed 22/26 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown, while Singleton tallied just eight carries for 19 yards and two scores.
“They came out and played how they were supposed to,” Penn State head coach James Franklin said following their season opener. “Have a ton of things to get cleaned up. The reps they got late in the game for twos and threes will be really valuable. Not perfect, but will serve them well as the season goes on. Overall, played how they were supposed to.”
FIU led Bethune-Cookman just 7-3 through the opening quarter, but outscored the Wildcats 35-6 over the final three quarters to open its season with a win for the first time since 2022. The Panthers rushed for six touchdowns (courtesy of four different players) in the dominant win.
Penn State has not dropped a home game to an unranked opponent since Oct. 23, 2021 (20-18 9OT loss to Illinois).
