T.J. Hockenson, Vikings: Hockenson seems to be a forgotten man in the fantasy world after a down year where he was working his way back from injury. But when healthy, he’s a top-five fantasy tight end. With wideout Jordan Addison suspended for the first three games and newly reacquired Adam Thielen settling in, a hot start is coming for Hockenson. Minnesota’s first four matchups are against defenses that were in the top half of the league for fantasy points allowed to tight ends last year.

Sam LaPorta, Lions: This isn’t an indictment on LaPorta as a player because he remains one of the better tight ends in the league. Unfortunately for him, we have a math problem in Detroit. When Jameson Williams broke out last year, LaPorta saw his numbers decline. Now, the offense features Amon-Ra St. Brown, Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery and rookie Isaac TeSlaa, who could all command targets. When you factor in the loss of Ben Johnson as their playcaller, the interior of the line no longer having Frank Ragnow and Kevin Zeitler, as well as a more difficult schedule, it gets hard to see all the Lions paying off for fantasy.

Jared Goff also threw for 37 touchdowns last year, which was by far the most he’s tossed during his nine years in the NFL and led to a 6.9% TD rate — well above his career rate of 4.8%. St. Brown and Gibbs will be fine, but LaPorta will have trouble reaching his ceiling outcomes with so many quality options in this offense.
