Emma Raducanu: British No 1 to skip representing Great Britain at Billie Jean King Cup finals to take Korea Open wildcard | Tennis News

Emma Raducanu has confirmed she will not represent Great Britain at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen this month.

Britain face Japan in the quarter-finals on September 18, with Raducanu initially named in Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong’s squad earlier this summer alongside Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal and Jodie Burrage.

Raducanu led Great Britain to a semi-final finish at the 2024 BJK Cup Finals, winning all three singles matches she featured in and claiming their only point in their last-four defeat to Slovakia.

Marion Bartoli believes Emma Raducanu will learn more from playing the top players after she exited the US Open

The British No 1 has decided to withdraw from the Great Britain squad to play in the WTA 500 Korea Open in Seoul from September 15-21, live on Sky Sports, where she has been offered a wildcard.

Raducanu also skipped Britain’s qualifier ties against Germany and Netherlands this season in favour of a training block and will now miss GB’s third appearance in four years at the BJK Finals.

Keothavong will now look to name a replacement for Raducanu, who has previously spoken about how much she enjoys playing in the team competition. Either Britain or Japan will progress to face Kazakhstan or the United States in the semi-finals.

BJK Cup withdrawal puts focus on WTA Tour schedule

Raducanu saw her US Open hopes ended in the third round with a crushing 6-1 6-2 defeat by Elena Rybakina to end a promising summer campaign, which saw her working with Rafael Nadal’s former coach Francisco Roig.

That partnership is set to continue, while Sky Sports understands Raducanu is disappointed about not featuring for Great Britain but is prioritising the WTA calendar and contact time with Roig on the road.

Raducanu has limited ranking points to defend during the rest of the WTA Tour season, giving her the opportunity over the coming months to move up the rankings and try to secure a seeded place at the Grand Slam events next year.

Speaking after her US Open exit against Elena Rybakina, Emma Raducanu believes she is heading in the right direction and spoke about dealing with the pressures whilst in New York

She reached the quarter-finals during last year’s Korea Open, where she retired injured after losing the opening set, with the former US Open champion also making a run to the semi-finals at the same event in 2022.

Raducanu is also set to feature in the WTA 1000 China Open from September 25-October 5.
