Baker Mayfield gives props to DeMeco Ryans’ defense

Baker Mayfield remembers the last time he stepped foot into NRG Stadium to take on the Houston Texans. That comeback from a then-rookie quarterback in C.J. Stroud and a rising coach in DeMeco Ryans welcomed a new sense of respect from the veteran Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback.

Mayfield, who guided the Buccaneers back to a 23-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, gave high praise to the Texans on Wednesday during an interview with team reporter Casey Phillips, calling Houston a challenging team to prepare for.

“It starts with DeMeco Ryans,” Mayfield said ahead of Tampa’s matchup vs. the Texans. “Just the type of guy he is, the type of leader, a guy who was a successful NFL linebacker– he’s going to demand that his guys play extremely hard, and that’s the one thing I remember [from 2 years ago]

“They fly to the ball. It presents a tough task for us, but we’ll see what we can do.”

In Week 9’s 39-37 victory for the Texans, blows were delivered in a wild and whacky fourth quarter. For Mayfield, he culminated three scoring drives, including connecting for two touchdown passes. As for Stroud, he set a rookie franchise record with a five-touchdown performance, including the game-winner to Tank Dell with under five seconds remaining.

“I just remember that drive, it’s such a memorable drive. He hits a couple passes short, then we hit Tank on the big seven route towards their sideline and then come back the next play and then we hit Tank in the end zone,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said recalling the play. “What a memorable play, one that always resonates in my mind, just when you see rookies who made the plays they were able to make at that time. You knew we had something special in those guys.”

Kickoff from NRG Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
