Kate Middleton Pays Tribute to Princess Diana With Her Sentimental Brooch

After wearing the late Queen Elizabeth II’s pearls for the Duchess of Kent’s funeral on Tuesday, Kate Middleton—Catherine, Princess of Wales—turned to sentimental jewelry once again for the U.S. state visit today. Greeting U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle, Kate sported a three feather brooch featuring a coronet in the center, representing the badge of the Prince of Wales.

The diamond and emerald brooch has a long royal history. It was first given to Queen Alexandra by her husband, King Edward VII, when she was the Princess of Wales in 1863. Following her engagement to Prince Charles, Princess Diana wore the piece on several occasions, often as a pendant, while Queen Camilla has also been photographed with the brooch in the past.

Alongside the royal heirloom, Kate Middleton’s go-to royal uniform was well represented for day one of the state visit, opting for a burgundy Emilia Wickstead coat dress, a matching hat by London-based label Jane Taylor, and a Chanel top-handle bag. Alongside her, Melania Trump has already shown some sartorial British politeness, as she emerged from the Air Force One on the London Stansted Airport tarmac yesterday evening wearing a Burberry coat.

The Princess of Wales is expected to accompany other senior royals at tonight’s state banquet at Windsor Castle, where she is likely to wear more jewelry from the royal vaults in the form of a glittering tiara. On Thursday, Kate will join Melania at Frogmore Gardens for an engagement with the Scouts.
