It’s officially time to dust off our fall scent wardrobes. (The changing leaves and Lorelai Gilmore told us so!) And if you’re looking for something new, the latest fragrance trends lean into cozy scents that make up for the impending chill in the air.
“Traditional amber and gourmand notes are often associated with fall fragrance,” Caroline Ornst, DSM-Firmenich’s fragrance development director, tells Fashionista over email. “During the fall and winter, consumers tend to choose warmer, richer and fuller-bodied scents that feel indulgent and create a sense of coziness and warmth.”
Woodsy and amber-y juices especially take center stage during campfire season, while autumnal gourmands — think caramel, marshmallow and, of course, pumpkin — shine as any sweet tooth’s must-have transitional scents. And fruity notes, while traditionally associated with summer, are still present: We’re looking at fig, one of the trendiest of the moment.
Ahead, we’ve rounded up 29 fall-approved fragrances for the cooler months ahead. Click through the galleries to shop them all.
Amber
Known for its long-lasting staying power and rich scent profile, amber is quite the heavy hitter in the fragrance industry. It’s the powerhouse behind plenty of fan-favorite formulations, and it plays well with everything from musks to creamy vanillas. Beyond its strength, amber’s beauty lies in its versatility: Pair it with crème de cacao for a delectable gourmand à la Juicy Couture’s Just Moi, or go for a woodsy floral with Who Is Elijah’s Nomad.
“Amber is ideal for those who enjoy bold, comforting fragrances that linger, especially in the cooler months or for evening wear,” Ornst notes.

Neo-Gourmand
Fall scents often skew classic gourmand, as caramel, cinnamon, vanilla and marshmallow notes satisfy cravings for coziness, but neo-gourmands are having a moment. “While traditional gourmands evoke comfort and pleasure, neo-gourmands evoke nostalgia and creativity,” says Ornst. They deliver sophisticated and unexpected food-inspired scents, such as Snif’s Crumb Couture, which channels the buttery taste of a Parisian croissant.
“Neo-gourmands are not about smelling like a cupcake, but more about savoring a multisensorial pleasure evoking the art of texture – combining an emotional appeal with a layered complexity,” Ornst adds.

Fig
Apples and pumpkins dominate autumnal fruit favorites (yes, pumpkins are a fruit), but this season, a hot new bombshell has entered the orchard. Ornst names fig, a juicy honey-tasting fruit, as an underrated fragrance note for fall: “Fig has a comforting, nostalgic quality that evokes memories of late summer and early fall, making it a perfect transitional scent,” she says. “It is a complex ingredient, can be fresh or creamy, which also makes it versatile for different seasons.”
Try Phlur’s Father Figure for a “fresh, yet grounded” transitional scent featuring an earthy take on the sweet fruit, or embrace a rosy floral bouquet balanced by the fig’s ripeness via Lancôme’s Absolue Forbidden Rose.
