Jennifer Lawrence Heralds the Return of the Ripped Jean

Ripped jeans are a tough sell—I think we’re all still a little traumatized from the early aughts penchant for drainpipe denim, with accordion-like rips from the knees to the hips, worn by both video vixens and indie sleaze devotees. Enter Jennifer Lawrence, with a decidedly more laidback take that imagines ripped jeans as an elevated basic.

The actor was photographed out and about in New York in a pair of low-rise, super light wash blue baggy jeans that featured one confident rip on the knee. She wore them with a black buckle belt that also matched her black mini shoulder bag from The Row, and what can only be described as the perfect white t-shirt (slightly boxy, stopping just below the midriff, loose bicep-grazing sleeves—probably from her favorite, Leset), and The Row’s brown Hugh sandals that looped around her toe. Ever a fan of the novelty cap, she wore a black version and oval sunglasses.

As always, it’s a classic Jennifer Lawrence look: a loose and lithe silhouette, a chic and covetable handbag, incredibly good basics, light touch but thought through accessories. Lawrence loves low-rise and boyfriend-style denim, trends that don’t look like they’re going anywhere anytime soon. (And that’s easily shopped too, from classic Levi’s to New York fave Still Here). The No Hard Feelings actor avoids the skater boy look and makes the jeans more of an elevated essential by styling them smartly, leaning on brands like The Row, La Ligne, and the aforementioned Leset, adding in that hard-working white tee, high-quality linens, a contrasting ballet flat or flip-flop, and good outerwear—avec a Fendi or Prada bag of course.

And while temperatures continue to drop, the breezy ripped jeans have also found a fan in Rihanna, who’s already been spotted wearing the same pair twice. Rih styled her double-knee-ripped denim in a striped polo top and a charm-laden Louis Vuitton bag. A much more decidedly maximalist, luxe look than Lawrence, but it just goes to show you that the ripped jeans can fit any vibe. I’ve just got back from London Fashion Week too, where rising designer Aaron Esh paired lightly frayed denim and leathery cigarette pants with impeccably tailored suits and sexy draped silks on his spring summer 2026 runway.

So just like Jennifer Lawrence, don’t be afraid! And be prepared to strap into your breezy ripped jeans for the foreseeable.
