Dallas Cowboys history: Most appearances on NBC Sunday Night Football

The Dallas Cowboys are America’s Team. They are a ratings magnet. We see this played out all of the time and ways both old and new. All media wants a piece of the Cowboys and does their best to amplify them.

Consider that the upcoming week of sporting festivities has been hyped up for a few months now. The Ryder Cup begins play on Friday (the main action of which will be broadcast by NBC which will be pertinent in a moment), college football is serving us up both Alabama/Georgia and Oregon/Penn State (the latter of which is on NBC, again more in a moment), and Major League Baseball is wrapping up its regular season with all sorts of chaos as teams chase playoff spots. Oh, and the NFL will play!

Obviously there will be NFL action on Thursday, but the bulk of it all will take place on Sunday. The day’s primetime event, as you are aware, will be the Dallas Cowboys hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football which is broadcasted by, wait for it, NBC.

The 2025 season marks the 20th of this iteration of SNF as NBC took over in 2006. We joked during the 2023 regular season about how FOX’s top broadcast crew (at the time Kevin Burkhardt, Greg Olsen, Erin Andrews, and Tom Rinaldi) was the unofficial broadcast of the Cowboys what with how they had so many of their games, but a strong argument can be made for NBC and SNF.

Consider that this week’s game will mark the 83rd time that the Cowboys have appeared on Sunday Night Football. This is far and away the most that any team has ever appeared on the program. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the second-most with a paltry 60.

Television networks are certainly strategic with how they line things up and it is certainly no coincidence that Dallas is on NBC this week of all weeks given all of the action that it will hold. As noted the Ryder Cup will be broadcast by NBC (and USA Network which it essentially owns), and Saturday night will feature #3 Penn State hosting #6 Oregon in Happy Valley in what is arguably the biggest game of the college football season to date.

The Cowboys are America’s Team as discussed. Even though we know this to be true, sometimes it is staggering to have it put into perspective.
