Is Deebo due for a big day offensively against Atlanta?

Wide receiver and kick returner Deebo Samuel Sr. has been as advertised for the Commanders’ three games into his tenure in Washington. Especially special teams, where Samuel currently leads the league in kick return yards at 36.8 yards per return. That is six yards better than the second-leading returner in the league. He has made several splash plays in that category and has flashed occasionally offensively. Samuel’s debut against the Giants was his most impressive offensive performance, where he racked up 96 yards from scrimmage. However, the issue since the Giants game is that Samuel’s offensive production has dipped each game since. Samuel had 44 yards from scrimmage against the Green Bay Packers and just 29 against the Las Vegas Raiders, respectively.

On a week where receiver Terry McLaurin is doubtful to play against the Atlanta Falcons due to a quad injury, Washington’s receivers seriously lack depth and dangerously need someone in the group to step up. Herein lies Samuel’s opportunity, who has been quiet offensively over the last two weeks. Furthermore, this is an opportunity for offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to heavily feature Samuel and maximize his touches. Especially if McLaurin is out, as they will likely take Samuel off of kick return duties to keep him fresh for their offense.

Of course, everything will not all fall on Samuel this week. The Falcons boast a top-three defensive unit in the NFL. It will be an all-hands-on-deck effort from everyone on the field. It also raises the question of whether Washington can carry over its success on the ground against the Raiders into its matchup against the Falcons, which would significantly counteract Atlanta’s impressive pass rush. All things are to be considered, but for me, Samuel is a major key to the Commanders’ offensive success this week.
