Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we examine the celebrity couples who give us hope for our own romantic futures as we try to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
I have had, to put it mildly, confusing romantic feelings for Kieran Culkin ever since Succession. I mean, said feelings aren’t that hard to parse: he is famously a handsome actor and, standing at 5’6”, a card-carrying short king (I love those!). But the mean psychosexual banter his character Roman Roy exchanged with J. Smith-Cameron’s Gerri Kellman really activated the part of my brain that still thinks negging each other peerlessly is the height of romance.
But my feelings for Culkin have only heightened since he and his wife of 12 years, advertising specialist Jazz Charton, entered the public eye in earnest at last year’s Emmy Awards. “My beautiful wife, Jazz, thank you for sharing your life with me, and for giving me two amazing kids,” Culkin said onstage after winning the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama for his role on Succession, adding: ”And Jazz, I want more. You said maybe, if I win.” Lo and behold, about a year and nine months later, Charton is quite pregnant with the couple’s third child. “Saw Keanu Reeves on broadway and now I’m 9 months pregnant ♥️,” Charton captioned her bump-reveal Instagram post on Monday, a day after she and Culkin attended the Broadway opening of Waiting for Godot.
I certainly don’t want to hand men credit for merely seeming to like their families in public (like…you’re not Homer Simpson! You should enjoy the company of your wife and kids! God!), but in a world in which family-making and childrearing are becoming a) a major right-wing talking point and b) more and more materially difficult for families all over the ideological spectrum, it’s cool to see a husband and wife be so purely pumped about growing their family. Obviously, said family growth is easier to manage when you’re rich and famous, but dirty diapers are dirty diapers!
To that end, part of why I’m so drawn to Culkin and Charton as a couple relates to how firmly they resist making their family life seem picture-perfect. “Proud would be an understatement. So lucky to see this impressive man achieve his dreams—even while our kids deprive me of sleep and just general quality of life,” Charton wrote on Instagram after her husband hosted Saturday Night Live in 2021. She added: “Going to the after-party was a mistake.”
