Tyrese Maxey discusses gathering Sixers for organized summer workouts

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers are a younger team around their star trio of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George. Guys like Justin Edwards, VJ Edgecombe, and even newcomers Trendon Watford, Jabari Walker, and Dominick Barlow are young players coach Nick Nurse will look to integrate into the rotation.

Maxey, being the leader he has continued to be, decided to take matters into his own hands when it came to gathering the youngsters together to get some summer workouts in. He discussed it a bit at media day, but went into it more on the first day of training camp on Saturday.

“It started with Justin during the season,” Maxey began. “I told him, ‘As soon as the season’s over, as soon as my hand heals and I start working out, come to Dallas for a week and I’ll just show you how I work.’ And of course we got VJ. I talked to him and he came up here. Messaged him a little bit. They always do the runs in L.A. and I’m always there working out anyway, so I was like listen, let’s go grab all the young guys and go do something fun.”

The runs Maxey is referring to are the famed Rico Hines Runs. Edgecombe, Edwards, Jabari Walker, Trendon Watford, and others were in LA competing in the runs and putting in work. Maxey took the opportunity to have everybody together for some summer workouts and build some chemistry in the workouts, and they also had some fun by going to Disneyland.

“We’re all working out and playing basketball, so I’ll go work out with them, but also do something fun that’ll just be cool,” Maxey added. “Seeing a lot of 6-7, 6-8 guys trying to ride rollercoasters–it was pretty fun.”

These steps taken by Maxey can help the Sixers when the season begins in terms of helping chemistry as well as helping the youngsters take steps forward. Maxey’s leadership is a big help for this current group as Philadelphia looks to bounce back in a big way in 2025-26.
