When you study in the Fashion Design Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, you work parallel to painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and performance artists, among others, for a unique, interdisciplinary educational experience that challenges you to take an artistic and theoretical approach to your work. SAIC’s multidisciplinary fashion programs pair artistic exploration with concept development and skill-building, and are grounded in the technical, digital, artisanal and visceral ways of making.

Students in the fashion design degree programs receive rigorous training which is both artistic and professionally oriented. The faculty’s national and international professional experience offers unique opportunities for student learning, travel and global internships. Working directly with SAIC’s internationally renowned faculty of fashion innovators, including visionary Nick Cave and designer Liat Smestad, students are exposed to business strategies, marketing and designer branding concepts through professional practice seminars. The Visiting Artists Program and school-wide design initiatives offer additional inspiration.

Students also have access to the Fashion Resource Center, a hands-on collection of designer garments showcasing some of the most progressive achievements in the world of dress and fashion from the late-20th and 21st centuries.

Graduates of the program participate in the contemporary fashion and art worlds in myriad ways. Some go on to work in design studios or create their own lines, while others display their innovative work in gallery, installation, performance, or theatrical settings.
