Texas high school football team makes mid-season HC change


According to a report by the Amarillo Globe-News, Canyon (Texas) has decided to make a mid-season head coaching change after starting off the 2025 campaign with a record of 4-1.

Per the report, the Canyon Independent School District announced Monday evening that current offensive coordinator/associate head coach Matt Lovorn will take on the role of acting head coach moving forward. Canyon provided a press release, with no additional comments regarding the matter of Lovorn replacing Todd Winfrey, who had been Canyon’s head coach since 2021.

Canyon ISD athletic director John Peterson released the following in a press release regarding the mid-season change:

As of Monday, October 6th, Matt Lovorn, the current Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, will assume the role of Acting Head Coach for the Canyon High School football program. Canyon ISD will not provide further comment at this time as this is an ongoing personnel matter.

Winfrey through his time as head coach has compiled an overall record of 36-14 at Canyon, per the report. Before landing at Canyon, Winfrey had previously been the head coach at Stratford for eight seasons, leading them to a Class 2A, Division II state crown in his final campaign (2021) with the Elks.

The Eagles are off to a strong start to the Texas high school football season, compiling an overall record of 4-1 through five games. Canyon’s latest victory was a 49-13 decision over Piedra Vista on Sep. 26.
