Origin Story: In 2009, Steven Sashen and Lena Phoenix launched Xero Shoes with a simple DIY sandal kit. The response, which started with word-of-mouth in their hometown of Boulder, was major. Within three months, the company became the couple’s full-time job, operating out of a spare room in their house. Since then, Xero Shoes was featured on “Shark Tank” in 2013, where investors turned them down. Rather than being defeated, the duo raised $1 million in crowdfunding in 2017, scaled globally and expanded into major retailers.
