“I wanted to give her a more ‘Studio 54’ [style] blowout,” says celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who often works with Moore to craft her long lengths; usually delicately tousled or blown out to the max, though every so often, allowing for a chic chignon, and even a brief period of experimention with some bangs. This time, Giannetos gave Moore flowing waves with a mid part, following the geometric lines of her gown. “I wanted the hair to be free, with big personality,” he tells Vogue. The aesthetics of the Studio 54 era—sparkling, opulent, free-spirited—shone through for Moore’s glam.

Giannetos was kept busy across the evening, also styling Penelope Cruz’s hair. Cruz, who was receiving the Academy Museum’s Icon Award, wore a diamond studded cream Chanel gown that accentuated her hourglass figure. For her hair, Giannetos leaned into the striking shapes of couture dressing, with high-volume curls brushed out and styled into a deep side part. “The whole look gives old Hollywood elegance,” he says. Giannetos also gave Cruz a quick cut to a blunt décolletage length, and then added some caramel highlights.

Demi Moore’s hip length-plus, raven-colored hair is a signature. But it wasn’t always so, and it’s been a long road to today’s hair evolution: From her pixie cut in Ghost to the G.I. Jane buzz cut, chic bobs, blonde bowl cuts, and bratpack-era up-dos. Giannetos has been there to keep her extra-long hair healthy and in red carpet-ready condition.

To finish, Giannetos spritzed Moore’s hair with the Parfums de Marly Valaya Hair Mist, a delicate fragrance with notes of bergamot, mandarin, and white peach. “To give an extra touch to the hair, and have everyone look at Demi’s hair,” Giannetos explains. A look to dance the night away in, safe in the knowledge that the hair will stay perfectly placed ’til the wee hours.
