A Look Back at 10 Years of Celebrities Navigating Tricky Met Gala Themes



Just about every annual Met Gala is preceded by a mix of anticipation and trepidation around how celebrity guests, and the stylists and designers with whom they work, will interpret the evening’s official dress code. This is especially true of this year’s “Tailored for You” theme, stemming from the accompanying Costume Institute exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which celebrates the history of the Black dandy.

While always aligned with the subject of that year’s spring Costume Institute exhibition, these sartorial mandates — put forth by Vogue — are rarely straightforward. And while some attendees make their best effort to respectfully adhere to the theme, many others… take some liberties.
