Boston Celtics injury report: 2 starters upgraded for Game 1 vs. Knicks Monday

The Celtics will be back at full strength on Monday when they open up their second-round series against the New York Knicks. The team released a clean injury report on Sunday, clearing the way for Jrue Holiday to return from a strained hamstring injury for Game 1.

Holiday initially suffered the injury in Game 2 of the Celtics’ first round series against the Magic. He missed the final three games of that 4-1 Boston series win and has yet to speak with reporters since suffering the injury.

The veteran guard did take part in two Celtics practices this weekend however, and his progress in recovery was highlighted by Joe Mazzulla.

“He was able to work on everything he wanted to work on,” Mazzulla said Saturday. “He’s getting better every day.”

Holiday’s return will mark nearly two weeks of rest for the point guard to recover from the hamstring injury.

The removal of Jaylen Brown (bone bruise in knee) from Boston’s injury report for Game 1 is also notable. The All-Star forward had been listed as questionable for the final three games of the Celtics-Magic first round series. However, the athletic wing was able to get five full days of rest after the Celtics made quick work of Orlando, enabling Brown to progress with his recovery.

“For me, I’m just trying to trend back in the direction of being 100 percent,” Brown said Saturday. “Physically holding my ground and still making plays for our team. Even with guys being out — Jrue, J.T. missed a game — being able to step in and fill a role. I feel I’m decent. Now, moving forward, it’s a whole different ballgame, different team, different challenges. My focus is fixed on that.

“Structurally, everything is fine,” he continued. “There’s some other stuff going on, but I’m trending in the right direction.”

The Celtics will have a fully healthy roster available for just the second time this postseason when they host the Knicks in Game 1 at TD Garden Monday night. The two rivals tip off at 7 p.m.
