Brock Purdy contract update is more good news for 49ers

There’s still no contract done between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy. So far it hasn’t hindered their offseason, and an update from general manager John Lynch indicates the club is trying hard to ensure this contract extension doesn’t impact training camp the way recent long-term extensions have.

Lynch appeared on the ‘Unbuttoned’ podcast with Chris Simms and Ahmed Fareed, and while the GM wouldn’t divulge specifics of the talks, he provided optimism that things are moving the right direction.

“But what I will tell you, I can tell you, is we’re having really good, positive discussions,” Lynch said. “When it gets done? I’m not sure. Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. So, we’re making progress. We’ve had good discussions. I’m looking out here because our players are starting to arrive for their day of work. Brock’s out there and doing a tremendous job, as are all our players.”

There’s no real timeline where the 49ers can’t extend Purdy beyond the final year of his rookie contract. However, after negotiations with defensive end Nick Bosa and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk cost both players their preseason and presumably played a role in their respective slow starts, there’s some urgency with the QB’s deal.

Expedience was always going to be some factor in the Purdy contract talks because of the impact of the previous, prolonged negotiations. The start of the 49ers’ offseason may also help motivate the club to hash out a deal well before training camp begins in late July.

Lynch said after the team’s 6-11 season, head coach Kyle Shanahan emphasized the importance of a strong offseason program. So far, they’re meeting the mark.

“After a year like that, it was important,” Lynch said. “And Kyle did a great job saying, ‘guys when we built this thing, when we had our success, we had 99 percent of our guys here in the offseason. It’s voluntary. We can’t make you come, but man, it’d be cool if everybody came.’ And we had, I think, everybody but one player here when we kicked off this year, so we’ve got a motivated, focused team.”

If the 49ers are off to a good start to the offseason it wouldn’t make sense to derail it with a contract dispute with their franchise signal caller. The sooner the deal gets done, the better for the 49ers. That talks are still positive and ongoing is a good sign the team will avoid the mistakes of recent contract negotiations.
