Who better to channel Mary J. Blige at the 2025 Met Gala than Mary J. Blige herself?
For her eighth Met Gala (she first attended in 2008 for “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”), the singer tapped her friend Stella McCartney to create something befitting her status as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul. “I have to go to the Met looking like Mary J. Blige,” she says.
McCartney agrees: “Mary J. is everything, she is badass–she’s got the voice of an angel and the attitude of a diva. She is on fire, and having her in ice-cool, Stella McCartney masculine tailoring is about as good as it gets for this year’s Met Gala.”

Inspired by the legendary corps of tailors who fashion bespoke suits on Savile Row—and reminiscent of her fall 2025 collection—McCartney created a double-breasted white pinstriped suit and a floor-length coat. Referencing the Tailored for You dress code, the designer played around with the suit’s proportions, contrasting the outsized, sloping shoulders with the cropped blazer and flowing, high-waisted trousers. (With animal-friendly practices always at the forefront, McCartney used Responsible Wool Standard-certified wool to fabricate the suit.) The look was completed with a custom wire fedora from Stephen Jones Millinery. “It’s insane. I’ve never seen [a hat] like this before,” she says. The consensus?
“When I tried the cream with the pinstripes and the big shoulders, I was like, Oh, this is Mary J. Blige to the 10th power,” Blige says.

The singer is no stranger to adopting menswear aesthetics over the course of her storied career. “I’ve been doing the suit thing for a minute,” she says, citing the “Real Love” video. “If you go back, I used to wear the baggy Armani suits with the Teflon boots and the hat turned back.”
Last night, at the 2025 Met Gala, Mary J. Blige elevates the look to the 10th power, indeed.
