In terms of his goalscoring and assisting prowess, claiming Liverpool have hit the jackpot with Mohamed Salah would be an obvious statement to make, but there’s more to it than you think.

The Egyptian has been playing at a world class level for eight seasons now. There really isn’t a lot more that you could ask of him.

He’s got two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Super Cup, a Club World Cup and soon to be four Golden Boots alongside three Playmaker awards.

It’s frightening what he’s achieved during his time in Merseyside so far, and following his contract extension, he will still have two more seasons to play at Liverpool to make it a decade at the club.

But in addition to how perfect a player he has been for us in terms of his performances on the pitch, it’s rare you find someone who typifies Liverpool, who truly understands what a privilege it is to play for the Reds. In a recent interview, Salah expressed how close a match he and the club are.

The love affair between Liverpool and Salah

Speaking to L’Equipe, he said: “I’m proud of [winning the league] because Liverpool and I are very similar.

“Liverpool are known for pulling off incredible comebacks, turning seemingly hopeless situations around, and giving there all, all the time. In that sense, I think there are similarities in my career path, which no one could have imagined, in the fact that I never give up, and in the way I dedicate everything to football.

“…There’s no prerequisite for being a Scouser. So it’s a great feeling to feel love from the fans that rewards my work over the past eight years. To be honest, I don’t think about it all the time either, but I don’t take it for granted because it’s really precious.”

For a non-homegrown player to feel this way about the club is beyond special and knowing that Salah is fully aware of how much he is loved was likely to be a key reason as to why he decided to continue his stay with us.

Building a relationship with the fans takes time. It’s not guaranteed and managing it is a really difficult balance. As such, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave is made all the more bewildering.

Although’s there more to it than that with Salah’s contract decision. He’s fallen in love with the club.

He added: “[At Anfield] there’s actually one spot I particularly like, it’s on the right side where we usually play our first half, not facing the Kop. I don’t know why, maybe because for the past eight years, I’ve been started my matches on that side and just before kick-off, I have time to see the same faces.

“I don’t know if it’s superstition, but I like seeing familiar faces. In fact, the rare times when some people miss more than two matches, I ask our team manager to check why they’re not there, if everything’s okay. These faces that I know make me feel even more at home, there’s a warmth, a vibration, it’s hard to describe.”

These details and many more things he discusses in the interview give you just a slight glimpse of why Salah is a player that is unlike no other to play for the Reds.

He’s at home, playing in a country thousands of miles away from Egypt, where the native language and the culture is entirely different from anything he would’ve experienced before.

And yet, in a footballing sense, he’s found his perfect match. The significance of the adoration he has for Liverpool will take time to digest. We probably won’t be able to fully comprehend how special it has been to have seen Salah play for the club, but for the time being, we’ve just got to make the most of the next two years and continue to praise one of our all-time greats.
