While Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal may have hit the red carpet separately at the Cannes Film Festival this evening, one can assume that Abrams was there to support Mescal’s latest project, The History of Sound. The pair, who have been dating for just under a year, are often spotted together in public, though they have yet to make things red carpet official.
While the actor chose a sleek black suit for his appearance, Abrams delivered her own striking fashion moment: She wore a custom black satin-crêpe dress by Chanel that was layered with draped chiffon, and embellished with black crystals and jeweled buttons in the back. The design took 456 hours to complete, and features over 19,000 different embroidery elements. The look coincidentally (or maybe not so coincidentally) coordinated with Mescal’s suit.

“It’s the perfect, beautifully-elevated black dress. I’m obsessed with it,” Abrams tells Vogue of her glamorous dress, which she punctuated with a cascading shawl. “The shawl has this drama about it, but it’s also so effortless to wear; so light and ethereal. You remove the shawl and feel like you can go dancing into the next day.” (Dancing-ready for the premiere after-parties, perhaps.)

Abrams accessorized the ornate dress with Chanel High Jewelry pieces—including the “Particuliere” ring in 18-karat white gold, brown diamonds, and white diamonds, as well as a pair of “Champ de Blé” earrings in 18-karat white gold and diamonds. The star needed a little (or a lot) of bling—it is Cannes, after all. “Looking down at the rings,” Abrams says, “I am reminded that we are in Cannes, honoring the glamour of this historic festival and celebrating the magic of these brilliant films. I feel very, very lucky.” As for when Mescal and Abrams may finally make their relationship official on the step and repeat? There is still a few days of Cannes left—watch this space!
