A trade proposal to land Derrick White with the Warriors

Finding ways to improve the current roster will undoubtedly be a top priority for the Golden State Warriors’ front office this summer. The addition of Jimmy Butler, while highly impactful, wasn’t enough to ensure the franchise was among the genuine contenders in a loaded Western Conference.

In a recent appearance on “The Zach Lowe Show,” Logan Murdoch of The Ringer cited Derrick White as a potential target for the Warriors. White has been one of the Celtics best player for the past few seasons. However, with Jayson Tatum likely to miss the entire 2025-26 season due to an Achilles tear, Brad Stevens is expected to make some cost cutting moves.

“Another guy that I think you should look at for the Warriors going forward is Derrick White,” Murdock said. “A guy like that I think is something that the Warriors are looking at right now because Boston is expected in league circles to have some sort of fire sale or some sort of maybe reset… Just somebody that can play defense and kind of just settle everyone down. Especially when you have a young group like that, you need to settle them down in the non-Steph [Curry] minutes, so that’s something to figure out.”

Following Murdoch’s comments, Warriors Wire has pieced together what a potential trade package could look like:

Celtics Get: Gary Payton II, Buddy Hield, Trayce Jackson-Davis, a 2027 first-round pick (lottery protected)

Warriors Get: Derrick White

As the Celtics are a second-apron luxury tax team, they’re unable to aggregate salaries via a trade. As such, White can be the only player heading out of the door, unless the return allows Boston to escape the second apron. Therefore, if the Warriors wish to keep Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Butler, a move for White would be somewhat of a consolidation. It’s also worth noting that the above trade proposal passes the rigorous trade machine test over on Spotrac.

Hield makes considerable sense for Boston. Joe Mazzulla’s team leads the league in 3-point volume and would welcome another elite sniper. At the same time, Jackson-Davis could emerge as a long-term solution to Al Horford, who may or may not return for another season.

For Golden State, White would be an ideal two-guard next to Curry. He defends at an elite level, rarely makes the wrong read, and can hit the three of both the catch and the dribble. If the Celtics decide to part ways with the former San Antonio Spurs product, Golden State should certainly make its interest known. Unfortunately, White is likely viewed as untouchable by the franchise, with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis potentially more available.
