Steve Madden sues Adidas
On Wednesday, Steve Madden sued Adidas, claiming the company is monopolizing “common design features in the fashion industry,” specifically, the use of three stripes. “The use of band designs on footwear is ubiquitous in the fashion industry,” Steve Madden complained in the lawsuit. “Simply put, Adidas does not own all stripes and should not be allowed to claim that it has a monopoly on all footwear that includes stripes, bars, bands or any shape having four sides — parallel, straight or not.” This lawsuit comes shortly after Adidas allegedly demanded that Steve Madden stop producing two new shoes — the Viento and Janos styles — because the design is too similar to Adidas’ trademark. Steve Madden seeks a no-infringement ruling. {Footwear News}
Trump’s tariffs tank European luxury industry shares
European luxury shares immediately fell following President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 50% tariffs on EU goods effective June 1. This tariff hike leaves many European luxury labels in a conundrum: They can’t abandon the U.S. market because it’s a key area for revenue growth. But they also aren’t capable of moving production to the U.S. to avoid tariff prices. Analysts expect many luxury brands to follow the lead of smaller brands and mitigate the situation through price increases. {Reuters}

Brands and retailers have noticed an increasing number of product reviews with complaints about tariff-driven price hikes. It’s become an additional obstacle for brands trying to maintain consumer loyalty during the tariff chaos. However, some consumers have left positive tariff-related reviews that praise brands for their domestically-manufactured products. {Modern Retail/paywalled}
